Sick in India.

Had to happen sometime. Stupid Blue Sky Cafe and their papaya lassis. Turns out it was made with tap water. Darnit.

But I have a fantastic roommate, who woke me up with orange juice (in a box) and cookie / biscuit / crackers. And a very mom-like look that convinced me to take Motrin and drink a lot of water. I'm still dizzy and head-achey, but definitely better.

And now I know what it's like to get sick in India - the same as getting sick in Illinois, except I don't have to miss classes and it's impossible to go somewhere quiet. There are blind men singing for money on the street, some strange constant metallic clanking, car horns (everyone honks here, all the time), and people. So many people. And people make noise. Matt made a comment about how Kolkata was a city, and we'd been to cities before...except that Chicago is kinda quiet at three AM. Kolkata is possibly louder at night.

Everything is loud here.

I got my salwaar today. They're pretty. :-)

Love and don't-drink-the-water-no-really-don't-drink-the-water,
Stephanie

Dear Stephanie,

I'm sorry about your sickness. I mentioned that you're sick to someone who's been around, and she said "darn those mango lassis". She then said "Does she have Cipro", and when I said yes, she said "Take the Cipro. Don't give it a few days. Do it now."

So do.

The word is "Lotdryb", which means doing good things while keeping yourself safe and sane in a lot of dry beds.

How's Matt?

Love, Dad

what is it about the water that makes it so bad/dangerous?

Is it just becuse you aren't used to the stuff in it because you're from IL, or is it dangerous to everyone?

Is the tap water safe if you boil it first?

My darling daughter,

Apparently you forgot that you cannot eat ANY fresh fruits or veggies - they are grown with contaminated ground water, so the bacteria are in the food from the start - you may only eat cooked or better yet canned (IN A SAFE COUNTRY) fruits and veggies. How are you feeling? If you have diarrhea for more than a day, start taking the Cipro - and be sure to take the full prescription - otherwise you won't wipe out the bacteria completely, and the diarrhea will come back but be resistant to the Cipro. :~(

Please keep me posted. I am glad Matt is there to take care of you.

Love,
Mom

P.S. My word is "conis" - as in I am constantly concerned about you!

I have met with a company that think they have a method for blocking the rotovirus. They said that a similar, though not as effective item available from Hong Kong is Oral Rehydration Salts (similar to pedialyte).

If they had the product available, it would provide a quick solution (and preventative).

Eeek! Darn those tasty fruit drinks (drinks? I'm so American).

Feel better, wifey. Be a healthy panda. Or moose.
